The polarized IR reflectivity and transmission spectra as well as the polarized Raman spectra of single crystalline GeS 2 are measured. From a comparison with a factor group analysis most of the expected 141 optically active phonons are identified with their symmetry type. From the observation of rigid layer modes and from the Davydov splitting a force constant anisotropy of about 100 between interlayer and intralayer forces is deduced.
