Optical absorption, luminescence, and polarized luminescence studies are made on RbI:Pb 2+ from 4.7 to 50 K. It is found that the charge compensating vacancy is predominantly in the next‐nearest neighbour sites at these temperatures. The B‐band shows a splitting and the emission under B‐band excitation disappears around 20 K. Possible crossing of 3 T 2u and 3 E u levels with 1 A 1g is suggested to explain the behaviour.
