The gain and absorption of an electron‐hole plasma in pure InSb is calculated by including the effects due to the band‐gap renormalization and the band‐filling and by taking into account deviations from the parabolic band form. The intensity‐dependent changes of the index of refraction are obtained with the aid of the Kramers‐Kronig relation. The results explain the large optical nonlinearities which are observed recently in InSb by Miller, Smith et al.
