The excitation energies of charge carriers and neutral excitons in polyacetylene and polydiacetylene are calculated taking into account the electron correlation effects. The singlet exciton band is shown to split off a conduction band if and only if the electron‐electron repulsion on the neighbouring carbon atoms differs from zero. The value of this repulsion is found to be about 3 eV.
