Emission and excitation spectra of MgS:Bi 3+ phosphors are measured at 300, 80, and 6 K. Two emission bands 3 T 1u , 3 A 1u → 1 A 1g and three excitation bands A, B, C peculiar to Tl + ‐type ions are observed. Furthermore, the D′ excitation bands corresponding to charge transfer transitions are also observed. The phonon structure on the emission and excitation bands for MgS:Bi 3+ phosphors is compared with that for CaO:Bi 3+ and CaS:Bi 3+ phosphors. The values of the energy parameters of Bi 3+ center are determined from the position of the three excitation bands.
