Abstract The various magnetic structures compatible with the crystallographic symmetry in the anhydrous sulphates and selenates of the 3d transition metals are determined using the matrix method of Bertaut. The stability conditions and the minimum range of the magnetic interactions needed to stabilize the different configurations are derived.
