All samples of Bi 2 O 3 · Fe 2 O 3 or BiFeO 3 , prepared by different methods, exhibit when recooled from 700 K in presence of a residual magnetic field (≈ 20 Oe) an unusual increase in susceptibility or magnetization near their Néel temperatures (≈ 540 to 600 K), and this behaviour is characterized as thermoremanent magnetization (TRM). Salient characteristics of TRM as documented by Néel are observed. Different possible mechanisms on the origin of TRM in these samples including the formation of fine lamellae of α‐Fe 2 O 3 in Bi 2 O 3 · Fe 2 O 3 are discussed.
