The infrared absorption spectra of Sm 3+ ions in CaF 2 crystals are measured between 15 and 300 K. The temperature independence or dependence of the absorption bands, which are due to electric‐dipole forbidden 4f 5 → 4f 5 transitions, is interpreted in terms of static or dynamic electron–lattice interaction, respectively.
