The crystal field parameters of an octahedral Cr 3+ ion in normal and inverse spinel lattices are calculated in the point charge model. As an example LiFe 5 O 8 :Cr 3+ is considered in more detail. For this spinel the spin Hamiltonian parameter and the one‐ion anisotropy constant of Cr 3+ are calculated and compared with experiment. The investigations are extended to include the case of the crystal being under high hydrostatic pressure.
