Optical absorption spectra of Er 3+ in Er 2 Ge 2 O 7 single crystals are studied in the spectral range 14500 to 25000 cm −1 as a function of temperature from ambient down to 12.5 K. The transitions associated with the Er 3+ absorption lines are identified. Kramers' doublets of the Er 3+ ground term 4 I 15/2 are found at 13, 88, 125, 185, 230, 392, and 436 cm −1 relative to the ground level.
