A Hamiltonian describing mixed valence compounds and including d and f electron–phonon coupling is considered. It is shown that the renormalization of the electronic energy parameters induced by the electron–phonon interaction depends strongly on the nature (static or adiabatic) of the approximation used. The importance of the d electron‐phonon coupling on the narrowing of the f level and the softening of the phonon modes is discussed.
