A generalized thermodynamic theory is used to give expressions for the internal strains induced in piezoelectric crystals for given external strains produced either at constant stress or at constant electric field; only certain combinations of strains can be produced by electric fields. Previous results for the zinc blende structure are shown to follow from the general treatment, which is readily applied to any crystal structure or microscopic model.
