Calculations are presented for the thermodynamic properties and the excitation spectrum of an interacting spin–phonon system with S = 3/2. A diagrammatic technique is employed based on a recent generalisation of the drone‐fermion representation for S > 1/2. Corrections to the free energy and to the specific heat are calculated, including contributions up to second order in the spin–phonon interaction. Estimates are given for Cr 3+ ions in MgO. The dispersion relation of the coupled spin–phonon modes is also evaluated in second order.
