A simple theory of dynamic spin susceptibility χ( q , ω) of an interacting electron gas is presented by using the equation of motion method for the double time retarded Green's function. A suitable moment conserving decoupling approximation is used and an expression for χ( q , ω) is obtained which is quite general and results of all previous authors can be obtained from it in appropriate limits. The enhancement function I ( q ), in the theory shows a peak at q ≈ 2q F . By using a screened Coulomb potential and an effective mass approximation, the exchange enhancement of the spin susceptibility of alkali metals is calculated and the results agree quite well with experiments.
