With magnetic flux densities up to 10 T, Zeeman experiments are carried out on CdS: Ni 2+ crystals at low temperatures. Shifts and splittings of the 3 T 1 (F) → 3 T 1 (P) absorption components are studied in polarized light for H ‖ c and H ⟂ c orientation. The static crystal field theory is not a sufficient theoretical concept to interpret the findings, dynamic interactions must rather be considered.
