The motion of electrons in the surface phonon field is studied by means of the variational method. The phase diagram of surface polaron states is calculated as functions of the electron—surface optical and acoustic phonon coupling constants. Effects of an image potential on surface polarons are also investigated and a possibility of extrinsic surface small polaron states is predicted.
