The density functional formalism is combined with the concept of ionic pseudopotential in the form proposed by Meyer, Umar, and Young, and the different contributions to the equation of state of alkali metals are analyzed. The inhomogeneity of the electron density is shown to play a major role. The theoretical compressibility shows good agreement with experiment.
