The common properties of colour centres in YAG, LiNbO 3 , and PbMoO 4 crystals are discussed basing on the good applicability of the polaron model to these centres. A simplified Coulomb model enables one to describe the influence of melting point, lattice constant, and other properties of the host lattice on the properties of colour centres. Regarding the optical data of other oxide crystals known from literature the generalizability of colour centre properties in oxides is tested.
