The paramagnetic properties of LaCoO 3 are investigated theoretically. LaCoO 3 belongs to those perovskites which enjoy because of their catalytic qualities as exhaust catalyst increasing interest. The theoretical temperature dependence of the susceptibility is given and compared with experimental results. Good agreement between theory and experiment is achieved under the condition that only every second Co ion is excitable into the magnetic quintet state. The energy gap between low spin Co III and high spin Co 3+ is determined and compared with the gap resulting from the optical data.
