A contribution to the zero‐field splittings of Gd 3+ 4f 7 ( 8 S 7/2 ) in lanthanum ethylsulphate is calculated using a spin correlated crystal field. A particular mechanism is provided and estimated the sign and magnitude of the coupling coefficient. It is found, that the sign is positive and the contribution to the zero‐field splitting is of the correct sign.
