Abstract The Fick's equations are solved by the Laplace transformation method in the case of an impurity diffusing by the dissociative mechanism into a semi‐infinite solid at constant surface concentration. The only assumption made in the calculation is that the interstitial diffusivity is very high. The form of the substitutional and vacancy concentration profiles and the influence of dislocations on these profiles are discussed. It is pointed out that under certain circumstances the tails on diffusion profiles can be due to the dissociative mechanism.
