Abstract Effects of the Coulomb field by ionized impurities on the acceptor as well as on the donor states in germanium are studied by low‐temperature magneto‐absorption measurements. The broadening of the representative acceptor transition is roughly proportional to the two‐third power of the ionized impurity concentration. It is attributed to the Stark effect by ionized impurities which removes the degeneracy of the excited states. The effect is smaller for the donor state in which the level splitting by magnetic field is larger.
