The changes in the optical absorption and emission properties of CaF 2 :Mn after 15 and 80 K X‐irradiation are measured. A new absorption band is created at 450 nm. The same band appears in the excitation spectrum corresponding to Mn 2+ emission. Optical and thermal bleaching experiments combined with emission measurements indicate that the 450 nm band is due to Mn + created by X‐irradiation. The new band is tentatively assigned to the 7 S(3d 5 4s) → 7 P(3d 5 4p) electronic transition of Mn + in CaF 2 .
