For a cylindrical type‐II superconductor in an external magnetic field H 0 parallel to the sample surface the values are calculated for the critical exit field H ex ( B ) where a flux‐vacancy may be formed in the layer of vortices nearest to the surface and the critical entry field H en ( B ) where a new flux layer may be formed. The interaction of vortex lines with large‐scale surface distortions is also considered and shows a decrease in the value of the penetrating field in agreement with experimental results.
