An investigation is made of the descriptive power of the semi‐empirical k · p models and of the deformation models of the band structure of semimetallic BiSb alloys. Using simple k · p models it can be shown that for x > 3 ( x in at% Sb) the Fermi surface of the electrons assumes an ellipsoidal shape, whereas for the concentration dependence of the energy gap E gL one obtains a result which appears unrealistic. An application of models of the band structure on the basis of the deformation theory shows that if more than two bands are taken into account it is possible to obtain a concentration dependence of E gL , the essential properties of which are in agreement with the hitherto existing concepts.
