The optical properties of magnetite and iron‐excess manganese ferrites are analyzed in terms of both, the Drude‐Zener model of the free electron gas and the small polaron theory applied to the hopping of the electrons (Fe 2+ ions) in the octahedral positions of the spinel lattice. Several characteristic parameters of the charge carriers are deduced and a comparison with the dc electrical conductivities is made.
