In the framework of the path‐integral formalism of non‐relativistic quantum mechanics the Faraday effect theory of the local centres in ionic crystals with intermediate polaron coupling is developed. The dissipative properties of the phonon–impurity system are investigated by the non‐equilibrium density matrix method. In zeroth approximation the system is described by the trial Lagrangian, in which the Coulomb interactions of the impurity electrons with lattice defects and vibrations are imitated by elastic forces. In the first order on the difference between the exact and trial Lagrangians the expressions for the admittance tensor components of the system determining the Verdet and Cotton‐Mouton constants are obtained. At the absolute zero temperature the magnetic correction to the polaron effective mass is also calculated.
