The room temperature Raman spectra of α‐HgI 2 are re‐examined using the backscattering configuration on natural crystallographic faces. It is shown that the assignments of the symmetry species involved in the three Raman peaks is strongly dependent on the experimental procedure and that a great care is recommanded in choosing the scattering surface as well as in selecting the scattered radiations. By this method, the 18 cm −1 peak is attributed to a pure E g ‐type symmetry, the 29 cm −1 peak to both E g and B 1g ‐type symmetries and the 114 cm −1 structure to mainly A 1g and B 1g species. These attributions are based on intensity measurements of the lines.
