Electrical resistance and DTA measurements on single crystals of Fe 3 O 4 , in which the oxygen is partially replaced by the stable isotope 18 O, show a positive isotope shift in the Verwey transition temperature T V of δT V = (6.1 ± 0.05) K for the 18 O concentration of 43%. This result can be qualitatively explained by a theory which is based on the concept of the condensation of a coupled charge density–phonon mode at T V and takes into account both the electron–phonon and the electron–electron interactions.
