Single crystals of NaBr, RbBr, KBr, CsBr, NaI, KI, RbI, CsI are excited by two‐photon absorption of the second harmonic of a mode‐locked ruby laser at room temperature and/or below. Induced absorption is measured at the wavelength of the first harmonic. The measured absorption is interpreted in terms of the formation of the lowest triplet state of the STE or of F centre formation depending on the case and the temperature.
