Abstract The problem of local and resonance vibrational frequencies in a chain with a large number of degrees of freedom in a unit cell is studied. Repeat unit normal coordinates (RUNC's) are suggested as the most convenient representation for the numerical solution of this problem. The formulas obtained are applied to the calculation of local and resonance vibrational frequencies in a polyethylene chain with a single deuterized unit.
