Stress‐induced changes in energy of the phonons of the lowest acoustic phonon branch in the ( q 00 ) direction are investigated in Si by using inelastic neutron scattering. Applying uniaxial stress of 10 kbar causes energy changes in the order of 1%. A change in sign is found approximately in the middle of the Brillouin zone. Depending on the mutual orientation of the stress, the wave vector and the polarization vector of the phonons, different changes in energy are observed. From the observed energy changes general mode Grüneisen parameters are derived.
