The effect of the electric field induced interband coupling on the electronic structure and optical properties of cubic materials is investigated theoretically. The three independent coefficients of the quadratic electro‐optic effect are expressed by band structure parameters in the case of the E 0 , E 0 + Δ 0 transition of diamond type crystals and of the blue and violet exciton series in Cu 2 O. In the latter case relations between the band parameters of Cu 2 O are obtained from a comparison with experimental results.
