Uniaxial compression of ZnSe–Cr crystals along the fourth‐order axis results in shift and splitting of the zero‐phonon lines of the absorption band, connected with the 5 B̂ 2 ( 5 T 2 ) → ( 5 Â 1 + 5 B̂ 1 ) ( 5 E) transition of the impurity Cr 2+ ions, and in dichroism, which is caused by the reorientation of the Jahn‐Teller centres Cr 2+ along the stress direction. Spectra of stressed crystals are calculated on the base of the exchange‐charge model. In imperfect (twinned) ZnSe crystals two types of Cr 2+ centres are observed. These centres are identified as Cr 2+ ions in the interlayers of a twin structure.
