The conception of the permutation‐inversion symmetry group developed by Hougen and Longuet‐Higgins in the theory of non‐rigid molecules is applied to non‐rigid impurity centres in crystals, i.e. to impurity centres showing large‐amplitude motions of the nuclei. Examples of derivation of the symmetry groups for some molecular impurity centres are given and the transformations of the molecular coordinates induced by permutation‐inversion operations are discussed.
