Chemical shifts of the L 3 ‐absorption edges of Pt in RPt 2 and RPt 5 compounds are measured and correlated with the effective charges calculated using Siegbahn's method. It is found that the L 3 ‐edge shifts towards the lower‐energy side of the Pt metal edge in RPt 2 compounds, while in the case of RPt 5 the shifts are in opposite direction. An attempt is made to explain the behviour of these chemical shifts.
