The effect of three‐body interactions which are responsible for the Cauchy breakdown in ionic solids, is investigated on the electronic polarizabilities and photoeleastic behaviour of alkali halides. A new set of electronic polarizabilities of alkali and halogen ions is produced. The strain derivatives of electronic polarizabilities are evaluated by considering the influence of the crystalline potential on the polarizabilities of ions. The photoelastic behaviour is studied by determining the strain derivatives of electronic dielectric constant. Results obtained agree closely with experimental data.
