Abstract An analysis of the strain derivatives of static polarizability and effective charge parameter of alkali halides under hydrostatic pressure is performed within the framework of the exchange charge shell model. Details of the model. Details of the model and relevant theoretical expressions are given. The magnitudes of exchange charge polarization and its volume dependence are evaluated from the overlap integrals recently computed by Hafemeister and Flygare. It is found that the inclusion of the exchange charge polarization in the formulation of the shell model improves significantly the agreement between theory and experiment.
