The near ultraviolet spectra of CdCl 2 and CdBr 2 crystals doped with Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , and Ni 2+ at 4.2 K and the magnetic circular dichroism spectra of Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , and Ni 2+ doped in CdBr 2 are measured. The intense bands observèd in the spectra are assigned to charge transfer transitions between the halide ions of the crystal lattice and the 3d orbitals of the guest ion.
