Abstract The various restrictions which have to be imposed on the particle size in order for the Maxwell‐Garnett theory to be valid are discussed. It is shown that the requirement that the particle size must be much smaller than the wavelength of the light in the surrounding medium is insufficient near resonances of the dielectric constant of the particles. The relative merits of the various validity criteria are illustrated by some numerical examples.
