Using the Bogolyubov inequality, a more general polaron dispersion relation than known up to now is obtained. The effective polaron mass derived from it for high temperatures and for a strong electron–phonon coupling is the same, but for semiconductors with a suitable wide electron band, the effective mass is discontinuous as a function of the temperature and the electron–phonon coupling constant.
