Hyper‐Rayleigh scattering is observed in single crystals of NaNO 3 when the order‐disorder phase transition point and the nearby melting temperature are approached. Besides the central line at twice the wavenumber of the exciting radiation a wing and a phonon band are found. All spectral features are due to the rotational mobility of the NO 3 − ions. The temperature dependence of the hyper‐Rayleigh intensity is interpreted in terms of an Ising model.
