Photoelectron measurements using 21.2 and 40.8 eV photon energies with α‐phase Cu 0.83 Ga 0.17 and Cu 0.87 Ge 0.13 alloys and several α‐phase CuZn alloys are reported. No clear evidence of a virtual bound or split‐off impurity level at the bottom of the matrix band is found. Comparison is made between the results of published calculations and the measured valence spectrum of CuZn. Core level shifts as determined with AlKα (1486.6 eV) radiation indicate a transfer of charge to the Cu sites takes place as multivalent impurity atoms are added.
