The change of the hyperfine interaction constant A of impurity ions in crystals is considered as resulting from the exchange polarization of the bonding molecular orbitals, containing the 4S‐orbital of the impurity and the s‐ and p‐orbitals of ligands. Apart from terms considering the 3d‐electron covalency of the ground state and the 4S‐orbital of the metal ion the calculated unpaired spin density contains the contribution from ligands, by means of which the dependence of A on covalency for 3d transition metal ions in various hosts is explained.
