Relationships are derived to interrelate the experimentally observed variation in the reflection coefficient of light from metals during the adsorption and the microscopic characteristics of an adatom. A method is developed, similar to the introduction of pseudo‐potential in solid state physics and molecular physics, to describe the electron properties of adatoms. The theoretical relationships derived are suitable for treating experimental data. The theory proposed shows that optical methods are quite promising for the determination of important microscopic characteristics of adsorption.
