Numerical calculations are presented of an effective dielectric matrix which exactly defines a constituent screened ion in a perfect solid within the Hartree approximation. The accuracy of the numerical method is estimated using previous analytical calculations for a simple model. The nature of the screening charge is then considered in detail for Ge and reasonable values for the magnitude of the “forbidden reflections” are obtained. The behaviour of the screening function for a tight‐binding situation is also investigated.
