A theory is proposed of resonance scattering of X‐ray radiation on the electronic system of a metal which reasonably takes into account the damping of the intermediate states with a hole on the inner level. In virtue of the formulae obtained for the cross‐section of photon scattering, expressions are derived for absorption and threshold emission spectra. Adequate allowance for the finite lifetime of the deep hole permits the description of the re‐emission process. Investigated are the emission spectra arising in the event of transition of an electron between the inner levels of the atom of the metal when excited by a radiation whose frequency is less than the ionization threshold of the corresponding level.
