A new mechanism for understanding the g zz ‐ g 0 value in compressed D 4h clusters formed by d 9 ions is studied. This mechanism is essentially determined by the A 2g non‐bonding level, the ligand spin‐orbit coefficient playing a decisive role. The value of this contribution strongly depends on the degree of hybridization of the equatorial ligands in the A 1g ground level. In cases with “true” D 4h symmetry (and specially in Cu 2+ : NH 4 Br) the new mechanism can well account for the experimental g zz ‐ g 0 value without considering the influence of the zero‐point motion. In contrast, in Ni + :LiF, it is shown that the latter is mainly responsible for the observed g zz ‐ g 0 value.
