The surface spin‐wave energy in a semi‐infinite Heisenberg ferrimagnet is calculated. The study is based on a body‐centered‐cubic structure with a (100) surface as the outermost layer and where the exchange interactions between nearest‐neighbours, J 1 and between next‐nearest neighbours, J 2 , are taken into account. The conditions under which the uniform spin configuration becomes unstable are derived by considering a surface “soft” mode. Surface spin rearrangement is also discussed.
