Korringa's representation of the scattering problem is developed further to obtain a compact scattering formula which is applied to the multiple scattering by an infinite lattice plane. The well‐known results are derived very directly. Prom the computational point of view the calculation of the planar scattering matrix by matrix inversion is found to be more advantageous than by perturbation methods. If the lattice sums in the calculation of the structure matrix are extended to a wide lattice region, the half‐line summation method is more suitable than the ring summation method.
